Keith Harvey Miller

Keith Harvey Miller (1 March 1925-2 March 2019) was the Republican Governor of Alaska from 29 January 1969 to 7 December 1970, succeeding Wally Hickel and preceding William A. Egan.

Biography[]

Keith Harvey Miller was born in Seattle, Washington in 1925, and he was raised in Bothell. He served in the US Air Force during World War II, after which he became a holly farmer in Olympia. In 1957, he was hired by the IRS in Anchorage, Alaska, and he served in the State House in 1962 before serving as Secretary of State of Alaska from 1966 to 1969 and as Governor from 1969 to 1970, succeeding Wally Hickel after Hickel was appointed Secretary of the Interior by President Richard Nixon. He lobbied extensively for the Trans-Alaska Pipeline, but he was defeated for re-election in 1970. Miller went on to serve in the State Senate from 1972 to 1976 and as chair of the Alaska Transportation Commission from 1977, and he died of pancreatic cancer in 2019.
