Katrina Shealy

Katrina Shealy (25 December 1954-) was a member of the South Carolina Senate (R-23) from 2013, succeeding Jake Knotts.

Biography[]

Katrina Shealy was born in Columbia, South Carolina in 1954. She worked as an insurance executive and as chairwoman of the Lexington County Republican Party before being elected to the State Senate in 2012. On 7 September 2022, she lashed out at her male colleagues in the State Senate over an anti-abortion bill, saying that she did not want anyone in the room to make life-and-death decisions for herself, her daughter, her granddaughter, or anyone else; that she did not want her medical professional to worry about a fine or time in prison in the middle of a procedure, and that she did not want a 10-year-old who was raped by her 13-year-old brother (as had happened in West Columbia) to worry about what to do next, as there was no sexual education in elementary school school. Shealy said that she was pro-life, also caring for the lives of the mothers, children who were already born, and children who were forced into adulthood. She accused her male colleagues of not caring about the domestic violence or poverty experienced by underage parents because they felt that they had already done their job by banning abortions.
