Kathryn Garcia (3 March 1970-) was a Democratic candidate for Mayor of New York City in 2021.

Biography[]

Kathryn McIver was born in Brooklyn, New York City in 1970, and she was adopted and raised in Park Slope. She interned at the Department of Sanitation before becoming a policy analyst for the Department of Finance and in several other city offices. From 2014 to 2020, she served as Commissioner of the New York City Department of Sanitation, the second woman to hold that title; she also briefly served as interim Chair of NYCHA and as Food Czar for New York's COVID-19 response. On 18 September 2020, she announced her candidacy for Mayor of New York, and she was endorsed by the Times and the Daily News.
