The Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was an autonomous republic of the Russian SFSR that existed from 1923 to 1940 and from 1956 to 1991, with Petrozavodsk serving as its capital. The republic was an independent Soviet republic as the "Karelo-Finnish SSR" from 1940 to 1956, with parts of occupied Finland being united with the ASSR to form the short-lived republic. In 1956, Karelia was incorporated into the Russian SFSR, only to declare state sovereignty on 9 August 1990. On 13 November 1991, the republic was renamed to the "Republic of Karelia".
