Karelia is a region of Northern Europe that is divided between Russia and Finland. The region is an isthmus, and the area has been ruled over by Sweden, the Russian Empire, Finland, the Soviet Union, and the Russian Federation during its history. In 1721, Russia took Karelia from Sweden, and it would become a part of Finland in 1918. This was a sore spot for the USSR, which won Karelia back during the Winter War. Today, Karelia is divided between Russia and Finland, with the majority being located in Russia.
