Karanis was an agricultural town located at the northeast corner of the Faiyum Oasis during Ptolemaic Egypt. Originally settled by the Greco-Egyptians during the 1st century BC, Karanis and the other Faiyum towns were settled by Roman veterans after Augustus conquered Egypt in 30 BC. Most of these soldiers were culturally Greek, but a Roman-style temple was built over the former Greek-style temple. During and after the Crisis of the Third Century, houses began to fall down, and Karanis was completely abandoned by the start of the 5th century AD.
