The Karachay-Cherkess Republic is a federal subject of Russia, with Cherkessk serving as its capital. The republic was founded on 3 July 1991, succeeding the Karachay-Cherkess Autonomous Oblast. The republic was created to represent the Karachays (40% of the population) and Circassians (12% of the population), and the majority of the republic is located among the Caucasus mountains. In 2010, the republic had a population of 477,859.
