Kanopos was an ancient Egyptian coastal town located in the Nile Delta. It was located on the eastern outskirts of Alexandria and on the western bank of the Nile at the mouth of the Canopic branch of the river, and it was the principal port in Egypt for Greek trade until the foundation of Alexandria; its name comes from the Egyptian name "Kah Nub", meaning "golden floor", referring to its riches from trade. During the Roman era, the town was known for its debauchery. It has since evolved into the town of Aboukir, the site of the Battle of the Nile in 1798 and the Battle of Abukir in 1799, both during the French Revolutionary Wars.
