Kanetsugu Kimotsuki portrait

Kanetsugu Kimotsuki (1511-26 December 1566) was a Japanese daimyo who ruled the Kimotsuki clan of Osumi Province during the Sengoku period of the mid-16th century.

Biography[]

Kanetsugu Kimotsuki was born in Kanoya, Osumi Province, Japan in 1511. The son of Kaneoki Kimotsuki, he killed his uncle Kaneshu Kimotsuki to become daimyo of the Kimotsuki clan, and he married the eldest daughter of Shimazu clan daimyo Tadayoshi Shimazu to foster peaceful relations with his powerful neighbors in Satsuma Province; at the same time, his sister married Takahisa Shimazu. In 1561, the peaceful relations between his clan and the Shimazu collapsed, and he allied with the Ito clan of Hyuga Province to counter the Shimazu. He killed Tadamasa Shimazu in battle that same year, but his wife refused to divorce him. In 1562, he captured Shibushi, but, in 1566, the Shimazu counterattacked and captured Koyama Castle and most of Kimotsuki's domains. The desperate Kimotsuki withdrew to a castle in the Shibushi area and committed seppuku.
