Kai Ti Chan

Kai Ti Chang (died 1935) was a Chinese warlord who was a Marshal in the National Revolutionary Army and the leader of the Black Dragon Triad.

Biography[]

Kai Ti Chang was born in Qing China, and he joined the Kuomintang during the Warlord era; he also became the boss of the Black Dragon Triad, the most powerful crime syndicate in China. Using his political and underworld connections, he became a Marshal of the National Revolutionary Army. In 1933, he partnered with the German SS colonel Albrecht von Beck to search for the Mirror of Dreams, the legendary device which could lead an explorer through the terracotta labyrinth at Xi'an to the Emperor's Tomb and the mythological Heart of the Dragon. In 1935, the American archaeologist Indiana Jones obtained the first piece of the Mirror by obtaining the Heart of Kouru Watu on Ceylon, leading to Kai and his assistant Mei Ying traveling to Connecticut and persuading Jones to help them find the rest of the Mirror. Kai secretly planned to betray Von Beck and use the Heart of the Dragon to take control of China, but Mei, an undercover government agent, warned Jones of Kai's intentions, resulting in Kai capturing her and taking her to his base at Peng Lai island, where he planned to sacrifice her to the demon Kong Tien. However, Jones rescued Mei before Kai and his triads could sacrifice her, and Kai fled to Xi'an and made it to the Emperor's crypt before Jones could. It was presumed that Jones killed Chang, but a crazy, outlandish theory is that Chang had been cast into the bowels of the underworld by the spirits of Qin Shi Huang's servants and devoured by the dragon below.
