Kagekatsu Uesugi (8 January 1556 – 19 April 1623) was the daimyo of the Uesugi clan and the Lord of Fukushima Province.
Biography[]
Kagekatsu Uesugi was the nephew-in-law of Kenshin Uesugi, and after the death of his father Masakage Nagao, he was adopted by Kenshin. Upon the death of Kenshin, he fought Kagetora Uesugi over the succession and took over Otake Castle in 1579, and forced Kagetora to commit seppuku. He married Shingen Takeda's daughter afterwards, and later became a vassal of the Toyotomi clan.
He engaged in battle during the Fall of Odawara in 1590 alongside Hideyoshi Hashiba and took part in his invasions of Korea in 1592 and 1597, and he received Fukushima Province as a reward. After the death of Hideyoshi the Uesugi remained loyal to the Toyotomi, and became a leading figure in the Western Army. In September 1600 eastern clans under Kagekatsu dropped their plows and took up swords against the Tokugawa in Aizu.
His rebellion was crushed by Kichiro Sakuma, Mototada Torii, Masamune Date, and Tokugawa troops, but in October–November he was able to fight the Date clan to a standstill in the Siege of Hasedo. After the end of the Sekigahara Campaign he was made a vassal of the Tokugawa and fought for him in the Siege of Osaka in 1615. As a tozama (outsider) daimyo, he was given the Yonezawa Domain mercifully. He died in 1623 at the age of 67.
