Kabir Nouri

Kabir Nouri (died 1191) was a Syrian scholar from the Sultanate of Damascus and a member of The Illuminated. He attempted to oppose fellow scholar Jubair al Hakim's attempts to eradicate all literature in Damascus, but was thrown into a book fire by him.

Biography[]

Kabir Nouri was a scholar of the city of Damascus, now the capital of Syria. He was a lover of literature, and he opposed Jubair al Hakim's attempts to burn all of the literature of Damascus during the Third Crusade in 1191. In the Madrassa al-Kallasah, while Jubair ordered all of the city's scholars to gather the books and burn them, Kabir attempted to convince Jubair not to burn the books. He told Jubair that the texts were gifts of knowledge and were needed by the people, although Jubair said that people trusted drops of ink more than themselves. When Jubair asked the scholar if he would do anything for the books and Nouri said that he would, Jubair told him to "join them" and pushed him into the bonfire, killing him.
