The Kabardino-Balkar Republic is a federal subject of the Russian Federation, with Nalchik serving as its capital. The republic, established on 5 January 1936, is located in the North Caucasus, and it is home to the North Caucasian Kabardians and the Turkic Balkars, who make up the majority of the population. In 2010, the republic had a population of 859,939 people.
