
Justin of Nassau (1559-1631) was a general of the United Provinces and a bastard son of William the Silent of the Principality of Nassau.
Biography[]
Justinus van Nassau was born in 1559, the illegitimate son of Prince William the Silent of Orange. He became a general of the United Provinces in 1583, when he was appointed Lieutenant-Colonel; in 1585, he became Lieutenant-Admiral of Zeeland, and he captured two galleons of the Spanish Armada in 1588. Justin served as governor of Breda from 1601 to 1625, and he was forced to surrender to Ambrogio Spinola after a costly siege. He was allowed to live for Leiden, where he died in 1631.
