Justin I of Byzantium (2 February 450-1 August 527) was Emperor of the Byzantine Empire from 518 to 527, succeeding Anastasius I of Byzantium and preceding Justinian.
Biography[]
Justin was born on 2 February 450 to the House of Iustinianus, and he originated from an Illyro-Roman peasant family. He rose to the rank of commander of the palace guard under Emperor Anastasius I of Byzantium, and when the emperor died in 518, he was acclaimed as the new emperor. Justin reigned for just nine years, and he adopted his nephew Justinian, whom he named as his successor before he died.
