Junyo

The Junyo was an Imperial Japanese Navy aircraft carrier that was completed in May 1942. Built as a passenger ship, Junyo was purchased by the navy in 1941 and converted into a carrier. The ship was sunk by US Navy warplanes during the Battle of Santa Cruz in 1942, but she was later raised and took part in several other battles during the Guadalcanal campaign. The ship was torpedoed in November 1943 and heavily damaged during the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the ship, no longer with aircraft, was used as a transport until being badly damaged by three submarines on 9 December 1944. The repairs were abandoned in March 1945 due to a lack of materials, and the ship was scrapped from 1946 to 1947.
