The June Days uprising was a failed workers' uprising launched by the laborers of France from 23 to 26 June 1848 during the French Revolution of 1848. The laborers rose up against the French Second Republic after it became a conservative regime; the government had intended to close the "national workshops" that had been created to give jobs to the poor. The National Guard under Louis-Eugene Cavaignac was sent in to crush the uprising, and 10,000 people were killed or wounded and 4,000 deported to the colony of Algeria in North Africa. The French Republicans prevailed over the socialists, and the government would betray the revolution in favor of conservatism.
