Juliusz Rommel (3 June 1881-8 September 1967) was a Major-General of the Polish Army during World War II.
Biography[]
Juliusz Rommel was born on 3 June 1881 in Grodno, Congress Poland, Russian Empire (present-day Hrodna, Belarus) to one of the oldest German families in Europe, being a distant relative of Erwin Rommel. Juliusz Rommel served in the Imperial Russian Army during World War I and rose to the rank of Colonel in 1916, and he served as a general of the independent Polish Army during the Polish-Soviet War. In March 1939, he was given command of the Lodz Army, and he was captured by Nazi Germany during the invasion of Poland in September 1939. Rommel spent the rest of the war in German POW camps, and he was praised by the communist Polish People's Republic as a war hero because he returned to Poland after World War II's end. He retired from the army in 1947 and died in Warsaw in 1967.
