Julius Kuperjanov (11 October 1894-2 February 1919) was a Lieutenant in Estonia who led Kuperjanov's Partisan Battalion during the Estonian War of Independence.
Biography[]
Julius Kuperjanov was born on 11 October 1894 in Lyokhovo, Pskov Governorate, Russian Empire (present-day Pskov Oblast, Russia). His family was ethnically Estonian, and their last name "Kupper" was Russified to "Kuperjanov" when they moved to Russia for work. Kuperjanov served in the Imperial Russian Army during World War I and was wounded in both legs in battle, and in December 1918 he formed the Tartumaa Partisan Battalion, which became known as "Kuperjanov's Partisan Battalion". He helped in the liberation of Tartu, but he was mortally wounded on 31 January 1919 during the Battle of Paju, dying on 2 February.
