Julius Converse

Julius Converse (27 December 1798-16 August 1885) was the Republican Governor of Vermont from 3 October 1872 to 8 October 1874, succeeding John Wolcott Stewart and preceding Asahel Peck.

Biography[]

Julius Converse was born in Stafford, Connecticut in 1798, and he became an attorney in Bethel, Vermont in 1826. He served in the State House in 1833 and in the State Senate from 1836 to 1840, and he then moved to Woodstock and served as Windsor County State's Attorney from 1844 to 1847, as Lieutenant Governor from 1850 to 1851, in the State House from 1867 to 1868, and as Governor from 1872 to 1874. He died in 1885.
