Julian de Groseillier

Julian de Groseillier (1544-) was a French explorer and military officer who served as Governor of Fort Espoir du Sud in Florida during the 1580s. He led the foundation of a colony which became rivals with the neighboring Spanish outpost of Fort Luz del Pantano amid the French Wars of Religion, but he became rivals with the English due to his colony's attempts to interfere with England's attempt at forming a trade monopoly among the local Native American tribes for the war with Spain. This resulted in the Battle of Fort Espoir du Sud, during which the English attacked and destroyed the near-defenseless French colony and forced Groseillier to offer his capitulation. He and the few French survivors proceeded to abandon their colony and return to their homeland empty-handed.
