Judith Sargent Murray (1 May 1751-9 June 1820) was an American essayist, playwright, poet, and women's rights activist who was most famous for writing On the Equality of the Sexes in 1790.
Biography[]
Judith Sargent Murray was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1751 to a wealthy merchant family, and she received a top-notch education. She wrote a number of essays, the most notable being On the Equality of the Sexes in 1790; however, she went on to justify female education in the context of family duty, supporting republican motherhood. She died in Natchez, Mississippi in 1820.
