Juan Williams Rebolledo (1825-24 June 1910) was a Chilean admiral who served as commander-in-chief of the Chilean Navy from 1890 to 1891, succeeding Luis Uribe Orrego and preceding Oscar Viel Toro.
Biography[]
Juan Williams Rebolledo was born in Curacavi, Chile in 1825, the son of John Williams Wilson. He joined the Chilean Navy in 1844 and became maritime governor of Atacama in 1855 before commanding the Esmeralda during the Chincha Islands War and capturing the Spanish Navy schooner Covadonga at the Battle of Papudo in 1865. After the war, he trained all the officers who fought in the War of the Pacific. Williams commanded the Chilean Navy at the start of the War of the Pacific, but Chile's failed blockade of Iquique and the losses to the Peruvian Navy ship Huascar resulted in his resignation in August 1879. He later returned to Commander General of the Navy from 1890 to 1891, and he remained loyal to President Juan Jose Balmaceda during the Chilean Civil War of 1891. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1908 and died in 1910.
