Juan Palarea y Blanes

Juan Palarea y Blanes (1760-late October 1811) was a general of the Spanish Army during the Peninsular War. He was killed at the Battle of Cuenca in 1811.

Biography[]

Juan Palarea y Blanes was born in Madrid in Castilla la Nueva, Spain, in 1760. He became a guerrilla fighter when France occupied Madrid in 1808, and became an attacking general. When Great Britain liberated Madrid from Napoleonic Spain in late June 1811, Palarea became a general of the British Army, although he commanded local troops. In October 1811, Palarea y Blanes was killed by a French cannonball at the Battle of Cuenca, suffering a heroic death at the site of a great Allied victory.
