Juan Javier Espinosa

Juan Javier Espinosa (2 December 1815-4 September 1870) was President of Ecuador from 20 January 1868 to 16 January 1869, succeeding Pedro Jose de Arteta and preceding Gabriel Garcia Moreno.

Biography[]

Juan Javier Espinosa was born in Quito, Ecuador in 1815, and he excelled as a lawyer before being elected President in 1868 as the Conservative Party of Ecuador's candidate. He was supported by Gabriel Garcia Moreno, but his respect of individual freedoms and avoidance of political repression angered Garcia Moreno, as it pleased his liberal enemy Jose Maria Urvina. After an earthquake struck Ecuador in 1868, Garcia Moreno took advantage of the ensuing chaos to overthrow Espinosa ahead of the 1869 presidential election. He died in Quito 19 months later.
