Juan Antonio Pezet

Juan Antonio Pezet (11 June 1809-24 March 1879) was President of Peru from 5 August 1863 to 8 November 1865, interrupting Pedro Diez Canseco's terms.

Biography[]

Juan Antonio Pezet was born in Lima, Viceroyalty of Peru in 1809. He served under Jose de San Martin during the Peruvian War of Independence and under Simon Bolivar at the Battle of Ayacucho, and he participated in Agustin Gamarra's uprising against the Peru-Bolivian Confederacy. In 1843, Pezet took part in Manuel Ignacio de Vivanco's conservative revolution, and he was wounded and captured in 1844 before being pardoned. He later served as President Jose Rufino Echenique's inspector-general in 1853, participating in the invasion of Bolivia. As Miguel de San Roman's vice-president, he succeeded the President on his death in 1863, and his reluctance towards resisting Spain's invasion of the Chincha Islands led to Pezet's deposition in 1865. He lived in exile in Richmond upon Thames, England until his return in 1871, and he died in 1879.
