Josiah Trelawny (born in 1861) was an English-American magician, conman, and trickster. He was an associate of the Van der Linde Gang during the late 19th century, and he became a steady member of the gang in 1899, only for the gang to break apart that year, causing Trelawny to settle in New Orleans with his family.

Biography[]

Josiah Trelawny was born in Cornwall, England, but his family immigrated to the United States when he was a young child. He became a magician and con man, and he befriended Dutch van der Linde, an outlaw of the American West. Trelawny was the only man that Van der Linde allowed to drift in and out of his gang, as Trelawny often provided him with good heist leads and also provided entertainment around camp before leaving. He later settled in New Orleans, Louisiana with his wife and his sons Tarquin and Cornelius, but, in 1899, he rejoined the gang for good after they rescued him from the bounty hunters Isaiah Edgar and Truth Williams, who were searching for Dutch. Trelawny helped the gang set up stagecoach robberies and the robbery of The Grand Korrigan riverboat, but he later left the gang as Dutch progressively became more insane and more members either died or left. He returned to his family in New Orleans, ending his ties to the gang for good.
