Josiah S. "Beanpole" Burton was a member of the US House of Representatives (R-MO) during the American Civil War. Burton was a member of the conservative western and border Republicans, and he had little enthusiasm for the Thirteenth Amendment until conservative Republican leader Aaron Haddam supported the vote. Burton proudly stood and supported the amendment.
