Josiah Favill

Josiah Marshall Favill (1840-1913) was a Union Army lieutenant who served in the 57th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War.

Biography[]

Josiah Marshall Favill came to New York with his family in 1843, and, in April 1861, while a student in Jersey City, he enlisted in the New York state militia at the start of the American Civil War. He served with them at the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861, and he enrolled in the 57th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment after his militia regiment disbanded that same month. He kept a journal of his war experiences, detailing the horrors of the dying and the wounded at Bull Run. On 14 April 1863, he was assigned to Samuel Zook's staff, and he served until Zook was killed at the Battle of Gettysburg in July. He was mustered out on 11 August 1864, and he later worked in the transportation business and produce exchange in Brooklyn. He died in 1913.
