Josiah Failing

Josiah Failing (9 July 1806-14 August 1877) was the Republican Mayor of Portland, Oregon from 1853 to 1854, succeeding Simon B. Marye and preceding William S. Ladd.

Biograpy[]

Josiah Failing was born in Canajoharie, New York in 1806, a descendant of Palatine German immigrants to the Mohawk Valley. He worked in paper staining in Albany and in trucking in New York City before moving to Portland, Oregon with his family. He became a shopkeeper, and, from 1853 to 1854, he served as Portland's first Republican mayor, supporting education and temperance and serving as a delegate to the 1864 and 1868 Republican National Conventions. He died in 1877.
