
Joseph Vance (21 March 1786-24 August 1852) was a member of the US House of Representatives (DR-5) from 4 March 1821 to 3 March 1823 (succeeding Philemon Beecher) and preceding John Wilson Campbell), from OH-4 from 4 March 1823 to 3 March 1833 (succeeding David Chambers and preceding Thomas Corwin), from OH-10 from 4 March 1833 to 3 March 1835 (succeeding William Kennon Sr. and preceding Samson Mason), and from OH-4 from 4 March 1843 to 3 March 1847 (succeeding Jeremiah Morrow and preceding Richard S. Canby), and the Whig Governor of Ohio from 12 December 1836 to 13 December 1838 (succeeding Robert Lucas and preceding Wilson Shannon).
Biography[]
Joseph Vance was born in Catfish (now Washington, Pennsylvania in 1786, and he was raised in Vanceburg, Kentucky and Urbana, Ohio. He worked as a salt farmer before fighting in the War of 1812 and rising to the rank of Major-General. He served in the State House from 1812 to 1813, 1815 to 1816, and 1818 to 1819, in the US House of Representatives from 1821 to 1835 and from 1843 to 1847, and as Governor of Ohio from 1836 to 1838.
