Joseph Merrill Harper (21 June 1787-15 January 1865) was the Democratic Governor of New Hampshire from 28 February to 2 June 1831 (succeeding Matthew Harvey and preceding Samuel Dinsmoor) and a member of the US House of Representatives (D-NH at-large) from 4 March 1831 to 4 March 1835 (succeeding Jonathan Harvey and preceding Samuel Cushman).

Biography[]

Joseph Merrill Harper was born in Limerick, Maine in 1787, and he became a physician in Sanbornton and Canterbury, New Hampshire. He served as an army surgeon during the War of 1812 before serving in the State House from 1826 to 1827, as a justice of the peace from 1826 to 1865, in the State Senate from 1829 to 1830, as acting Governor in 1831, and in the US House of Representatives from 1831 to 1835. He died in 1865.
