Joseph Horace Lewis

Joseph Horace Lewis (29 October 1824 – 6 July 1904) was a Confederate States Army general during the American Civil War and a member of the US House of Representatives (D-KY 3) from 10 May 1870 to 3 March 1873 (succeeding Jacob Golladay and preceding Charles W. Milliken).

Biography[]

Joseph Horace Lewis was born in Glasgow, Kentucky in 1824, and he became a lawyer in his hometown in 1845. He served as a Whig state representative from 1850 to 1855, and he joined the Democratic Party after the Whigs' dissolution. Lewis served as a Confederate States Army Brigadier-General during the American Civil War, distinguishing himself at the Battle of Chickamauga. He went on to serve in the US House of Representatives from 1870 to 1873 and on the Kentucky Court of Appeals from 1874 to 1898, and he died in 1904.
