
Joseph Hartwell Williams (15 February 1814-19 July 1896) was the Republican Governor of Maine from 25 February 1857 to 6 January 1858, succeeding Hannibal Hamlin and preceding Lot M. Morrill.
Biography[]
Joseph Hartwell Williams was born in Augusta, Maine in 1814, and he graduated from Harvard in 1830. Originally a Democrat, he became a Republican in 1854 and served in the State Senate in 1857, as Governor from 1857 to 1858, and in the State House from 1864 to 1866 and in 1873. He died in 1896.
