Joseph Ewing McDonald (29 August 1819-21 June 1891) was a member of the US House of Representatives (D-IN 8) from 4 March 1849 to 3 March 1851 (succeeding John Pettit and preceding Daniel Mace) and a US Senator from 4 March 1875 to 3 March 1881 (succeeding Daniel D. Pratt and preceding Benjamin Harrison).

Biography[]

Joseph Ewing McDonald was born in Butler County, Ohio on 29 August 1819, and his family moved to Montgomery County, Indiana in 1826. McDonald became a lawyer in Lafayette in 1843, served as prosecuting attorney from 1843 to 1847, practiced law in Crawfordsville until 1859, served in the US House of Representatives from 1849 to 1851, as Attorney General of Indiana from 1856 to 1860, and in the US Senate from 1875 to 1881. He died in Indianapolis in 1891.
