
Joseph Cilley (4 January 1791-16 September 1887) was a US Senator from New Hampshire (D) from 13 June 1846 to 3 March 1847, succeeding Benning W. Jenness and preceding John P. Hale.
Biography[]
Joseph Cilley was born in Nottingham, New Hampshire in 1791, and he served in the US Army during the War of 1812, fighting at the Battle of Sackett's Harbor and the Battle of Chrysler's Farm; he was shot through the leg at the Battle of Lundy's Lane. After his military service, he became an aide-de-camp to Governor Benjamin Pierce in 1827, and he was elected to the US Senate in 1846 to fill a vacancy. He served until 1847, and he died in 1887.
