Joseph Carter Abbott (15 July 1825-8 October 1881) was a Republican US Senator from North Carolina from 14 July 1868 to 4 March 1871, succeeding Thomas Bragg and preceding Matt Whitaker Ransom.
Biography[]
Joseph Carter Abbott was born in Concord, New Hampshire in 1825, and he became a lawyer in 1852. He served as owner and editor of the Know Nothing publication Daily American from 1852 to 1857, and he later edited the Boston Atlas and Bee from 1859 to 1861. He served as a Union Army Brigadier-General during the American Civil War, and he served on the Atlantic coast, in the Siege of Petersburg, and in the capture of Wilmington, North Carolina. He settled in Wilmington after the war, and he served as a Republican carpetbagger US Senator from 1868 to 1871, and he became a lumber manufacturer and editor of the Wilmington Post after he left office. He died in Abbottsburg in 1881.
