
Joseph Alston (1779-10 September 1816) was the Democratic-Republican Governor of South Carolina from 1 December 1812 to 1 December 1814 (succeeding Henry Middleton and preceding David Rogerson Williams).
Biography[]
Joseph Alston was born in Georgetown, South Carolina in 1779, the son of William Alston. He became one of the wealthiest planters in the state, and he married Theodosia Burr Alston, the daughter of US Senator Aaron Burr, to downplay his aristocratic status. He served in the State House from 1802 to 1812 and as Governor from 1812 to 1814, and he called up the state militia during the War of 1812. He died in Charleston in 1816.
