José Mariano de la Cruz de la Riva Agüero y Sánchez Boquete (3 May 1783-21 May 1858) was President of Peru from 28 February to 23 June 1823 (succeeding José de San Martín and preceding Jose Bernardo de Tagle) and of North Peru from 1 August 1838 to 24 January 1839 (succeeding Luis Jose de Orbegoso).

Biography[]

José Mariano de la Cruz de la Riva Agüero y Sánchez Boquete was born in Lima, Peru in 1783, and he came from an aristocratic background. He was a determined supporter of the independence movement from early on, having joined the Freemasons in Spain during the Peninsular War. He returned to Peru in 1810 and became involved in several patriotic conspiracies against Viceroy Jose Fernando de Abascal y Sousa's government. José de San Martín named him prefect of Lima in 1822, and he was elected President of Peru in February 1823 as the result of Andres de Santa Cruz's revolt against the Peruvian Congress. He was deposed by Antonio Jose de Sucre for failing to prevent Spanish troops from entering the capital, and he was arrested by the viceroy and exiled to Chile after approaching the viceroy about an anti-Bolivar alliance. He later returned to public life as President of North Peru from 1838 to 1839, and he retired on its collapse and died in 1858.
