
Jose Miaja Menant (20 April 1878-14 January 1958) was the Chief-of-Staff of the Spanish Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War.
Biography[]
Jose Miaja Menant was born on 20 April 1878 in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. Miaja served in the Spanish Army since 1896, and he fought in Morocco in the Rif War. In August 1932, he was promoted to General in the Spanish Republican Army, and he was abandoned by many of his subordinates for the cause of Nationalist Spain during the Spanish Civil War, while Miaja remained a supporter of the Second Spanish Republic. He took command of several army groups during the war, including at the Battle of Brunete. Miaja went into exile after the civil war's end in 1939 in the favor of Francisco Franco's nationalists, and he died in Mexico in 1958.
