Jose Mascarel

Jose Mascarel (18 April 1816-6 October 1899) was the Republican Mayor of Los Angeles from 5 May 1865 to 10 May 1866, succeeding Damien Marchesseault and preceding Cristobal Aguilar.

Biography[]

Jose Mascarel was born in Marseilles, France in 1816, and he joined the French Navy in 1821 and worked as a trader in Chile before settling in Los Angeles, California in 1845. He became a major property holder, a local Republican politician, and Mayor from 1865 to 1866. He attempted to prohibit the carrying of weapons in the city, and he was attacked by the nativist press for his poor English language skills. He died in 1899.
