Jose Maria Vargas (10 March 1786 – 13 July 1854) was President of Venezuela from 9 February to 9 July 1835 (succeeding Andres Narvarte and preceding Jose Maria Carreno) and from 20 August 1835 to 24 April 1836 (succeeding Carreno and preceding Narvarte). He was a member of the Conservative Party of Venezuela.
Biography[]
Jose Maria Vargas was born in La Guaira, Venezuela in 1786, and he worked as a medician before joining the independence movement in the 1810s. He was later exiled to Europe, where he continued his studies. In 1819, he returned to the Americas, settling in Puerto Rico, working with the Board of Health of the island. In 1825, he returned to Venezuela, and he oversaw the restoration of the University of Caracas. He went on to serve as President in 1835 and from 1835 to 1836, serving as a member of the Conservative Party of Venezuela. In 1853, he became ill and traveled to the United States, and he died in New York City in 1854.
