Jose Maria Bruguez (1827-26 August 1868) was a general of the Paraguayan Army during the Paraguayan War.
Biography[]
Jose Maria Bruguez was born in Asuncion, Paraguay in 1827, and he enlisted in the Paraguayan Army in 1845 and reached the rank of lieutenant in 1852 and major in 1862. During the Paraguayan War, Bruguez held both naval and land commands, fighting at the Battle of Riachuelo and attaining the rank of General following the Battle of Tuyuti in 1866. However, President Francisco Solano Lopez grew paranoid as Paraguay began to lose the war, and he had Bruguez and several other officers executed for an imagined conspiracy against him.
