Jose Joaquin de Olmedo

Jose Joaquin de Olmedo y Maruri (20 March 1780-19 February 1847) was President of Ecuador from 6 March to 8 December 1845, succeeding Juan Jose Flores and preceding Vicente Ramon Roca.

Biography[]

Jose Joaquin de Olmedo was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador in 1780, and he was educated in Peru before practicing law and serving in the Cortes of Cadiz from 1812 to 1814. After King Fernando VII of Spain dissolved the Cortes and persecuted and imprisoned its deputies, Olmedo returned to Ecuador and became active in the revolutionary cause, declaring Guayaquil's independence on 9 October 1820. He served as President of the Free Province of Guayaquil and twice served as Mayor of Guayaquil, and he went into exile in Peru after Gran Colombia annexed Guayaquil. He went on to serve as Peru's ambassador to France and Portugal before serving as Ecuador's inaugural Vice President from 1830 to 1831. He became President in 1845 after Juan Jose Flores' overthrow, and he survived a June coup before ceding power to Vicente Ramon Roca in December 1845. He died in 1847.
