Jose Ignacio de Marquez

Jose Ignacio de Marquez (7 September 1793-21 March 1880) was President of New Granada from 1 April 1837 to 1 April 1841, succeeding Francisco de Paula Santander and preceding Pedro Alcantara Herran.

Biography[]

Jose Ignacio de Marquez was born in Ramiriqui, Boyaca Department, Viceroyalty of New Granada in 1793. He became a lawyer at the age of 20 and was elected to the Congress of Cucuta in 1821 and President of the Congress at the age of 27. Marquez later served as Francisco de Paula Santander's Vice President from 1832 to 1833 and from 1835 to 1837, and he assumed the presidency after Santander left office in 1837. His anti-clerical policies led to the War of the Supremes from 1839 to 1842, and he ultimately crushed Jose Maria Obando and Santiago Marino's rebellion. He died in 1880.
