Jose Eduvigis Diaz Vera (17 October 1833-7 February 1867) was a Brigadier General of the Paraguayan Army during the Paraguayan War.

Biography[]

Jose Eduvigis Diaz was born in Pirayu, Paraguay in 1833, and he joined the militia in 1852 and rose to be a police battalion commander and the police chief of Asuncion. During the Paraguayan War, he fought at the Battles of Pehuajo, Estero Bellaco, Tuyutí (in which he commanded the Paraguayans against the combined allied forces), Boquerón, and Sauce and distinguishing himself by defeating the Allies at the Battle of Curupayty in 1866. However, he was mortally wounded when a Brazilian shell exploded over his canoe while he was fishing outside the camp at Curupayty, and he died of his woudns after his leg was amputated.
