Jose Carrillo de Albornoz

Jose Carrillo de Albornoz (8 October 1671-26 June 1747) was the Spanish Viceroy of Sicily from 1734 to 1737, succeeding Cristoforo Fernandez de Cordoba and preceding Bartolomeo Corsini.

Biography[]

Jose Carrillo de Albornoz was born in Seville, Spain in 1671, and he served as an officer in the Bourbon Spanish Army during the War of the Spanish Succession. He went on to serve in Sardinia and Sicily during the War of the Quadruple Alliance, conquered Oran from the Barbary States in 1734, and was made Duke of Montemar for his many victories against the Austrians in Italy during the War of the Polish Succession. Albornoz went on to serve as Viceroy of Sicily from 1734 to 1737 and commanded the 50,000-strong Spanish expeditionary force in Italy during the War of the Austrian Succession, and he died in 1747.
