Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera

Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera (24 April 1903-20 November 1936) was the President of the Falange from 29 October 1933 to 20 November 1936, preceding Ramon Serrano Suner. He was the son of dictator Miguel Primo de Rivera, and his Falange would take power in 1939, three years after he was executed by Republican Spain after the start of the Spanish Civil War.

Biography[]

Jose Antonio Primo de Rivera was born on 24 April 1903 in Madrid, Spain. He was raised by his father's sister after his mother died, and he learned English and French while privately taught at home. Primo de Rivera studied law at the University of Madrid from 1917 to 1923, and he served with the 9th Dragoons of Saint James in Barcelona; he was court-martialled for punching his superior, Gonzalo Queipo de Llano. In 1925, he became a lawyer, but in 1932 he was jailed for his involvement in Jose Sanjurjo's failed coup, and in 1933 he founded the fascist Falange party to oppose the Frente Popular coalition that ruled the government. In 1936, his party attempted to oust the Frente Popular, so he was arrested and executed by firing squad on 20 November 1936 by Republican Spain, only a few months after the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War.
