José Bernardo de Tagle y Portocarrero

José Bernardo de Tagle y Portocarrero (21 March 1779-26 September 1825) was President of Peru from 17 July 1823 to 17 February 1824, succeeding Jose de la Riva Aguero and preceding Simon Bolivar.

Biography[]

José Bernardo de Tagle y Portocarrero was born in Lima, Viceroyalty of Peru in 1779, and he came from an aristocratic background. He became Marquis of Torre Tagle in 1801 and served in the Spanish Army and as Mayor of Lima from 1811 to 1812 before conspiring with Lima's liberal nobles to agitate for reform. He was elected to the Cortes of Cadiz in 1813, and he defended South American independence while in Spain. He was made a Knight of the Order of Santiago in 1815 and was promoted to brigadier, and he returned to Peru in 1819. In 1820, he was the first Peruvian officer to hoist the national flag in the north of Peru on José de San Martín's invasion. Tagle became a close ally of San Martin, and he briefly served as President from 1823 to 1824, adopting a new Peruvian flag. He was deposed and arrested by Simon Bolivar for failing to prevent a mutiny in Callao on 5 February 1824, and he and his whole family died of disease during the second siege of Callao, despite never having betrayed his country.
