
Jorge Montt (26 April 1845-8 October 1922) was President of Chile from 26 December 1891 to 18 September 1896, succeeding Manuel Baquedano and preceding Federico Errazuriz Echaurren.
Biography[]
Jorge Montt was born in Casablanca, Chile on 26 April 1845, the nephew of President Manuel Montt and the cousin of Pedro Montt. He served as a Vice Admiral during the Chincha Islands War and the War of the Pacific before fighting for the rebels during the Chilean Civil War of 1891, overthrowing President Jose Manuel Balmaceda and assuming the presidency as the head of a military junta. He oversaw the abolition of nonconvertible paper money and the re-establishment of the gold standard, as well as the reorganization of the army and navy. He left office in 1896, and he served as commander of the navy from 1897 to 1913 and as Mayor of Valparaiso from 1915 to 1918. He died in 1922.
